For this psychedelic five-piece, it’s all about the music, working to explore and blend the science and art of sounds. Their list of influences is virtually infinite as it starts spilling out of the ‘bands’ and ‘music’ categories, and flows into ‘experience.’
Members strive for an almost vintage sound, incorporating/experimenting with analog and dated equipment, giving way to a lo-fi quality that’s warm and shoegaze-y.
These guys also have a “post-rock” hook though, as they blend minimalist styles with improv jams creating a dreamy ambiance of “space jazz”; jangling guitar chords, saxophone drones, and groovy bass sounds being held down by rhythmic kicks and punches on the [drum]set.
For this music, and any music, it’s all about repetition and rhythm, and if these elements are taken into account, any sound can be regarded as an instrument contributing to the sound of the music. On THATAFS’ new demo, “Meet the Assholes from Space,” this concept is explored briefly on “Black Rabbit” as field recordings and recorded samples are woven into the track’s jam to add a subtle depth to the listener’s experience. This style also calls to mind the post-rock era; bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Fly Pan Am (Constellation Records) are known for incorporating sounds that make you ponder ‘where/how did they find that sample?’ Definitely hoping to hear more of this kind of stuff from future projects by Time Hitler and the Assholes from Space!
